Bay of Lights, Sihanoukville | A Day Trip
I couldn’t wait to share my experience at the Bay of Lights in Sihanoukville. It’s one of those places that just sticks with you—the perfect mix of peaceful, scenic vibes, fun activities, and decent food (even for someone picky about local cuisine like me). This won’t be a long read, I promise! Mostly, it’s the photos that will draw you in, but let me give you a quick rundown.
Location
Sihanoukville is a beautiful coastal city on Cambodia’s Gulf of Thailand, and Bay of Lights sits right at the heart of it. It’s famous for its chill beaches and lively atmosphere. You’ll find this spot near Otres Beach and Independence Beach, making it super easy to visit from almost anywhere in the area. Trust me, it’s a perfect mix of laid-back daytime activities and some pretty epic night scenes with light shows and rides.
The Best Time to Go
If you’re like me and love sunny beach days, the sweet spot to visit Bay of Lights is between November and April. The weather is warm and perfect for outdoor fun, but just a heads up—it’s the peak season, so things can get a little crowded and pricey. If you’re okay with a bit of rain and want to avoid the rush, the months between May and October might work for you. Plus, you might save a bit on costs.
Special Events:
Cambodian New Year (April 13-15): Super festive, lots of cultural celebrations.
Pchum Ben (September/October): A beautiful window into Cambodian traditions.
My Day at Bay of Lights
I arrived around 10:00 AM, ready to take on whatever the day had in store. There’s so much to do here, whether it’s chilling on the beach, kayaking, paddleboarding, or getting pampered with a beachside spa treatment.
But, the real thrill for me? The Slingshot Ride. Oh man, if you want to feel your heart race and your stomach flip, this is the ride. It shoots you up into the sky, and you get these breathtaking views of the coastline. It’s wild but totally worth it.
In the afternoon, I went on a cycling adventure. For just $3.60, I rented a bike for 2 hours and explored the nearby beaches and hills. It was the first time in a while I’d been on a bike, and it reminded me of those school days when I used to cycle everywhere. Let’s just say the nostalgia hit hard, and by the end of it, I was worn out (I didn’t quite make it the full 2 hours!).
The Food Situation
Food-wise, there are plenty of options here—lots of stalls and restaurants to choose from. If you’re looking for halal food, though, you might need to do a little more searching. It’s not super common on-site, but you can definitely find some halal-friendly spots around town if that’s important for you. Planning ahead helps for sure!
The Cottage Vibe
I stayed in one of the cottages, and let me tell you, it was a dream. Think wooden cottages nestled in tropical greenery, just far enough from the crowds to feel like your own little escape, but still close enough to jump into the action when you want. It was so peaceful, with the sound of the waves and the fresh air. Just what I needed after a day full of activities.
Service with a Smile
I’ve got to give a shout-out to the staff. They were super friendly and really made me feel welcome. From the moment I arrived, they made sure I was comfortable and always checked in to see if I needed anything. It’s those little touches that make a place memorable.
Cost
And here’s the best part—the entrance to Bay of Lights is free! The cottages, depending on when you go, will set you back around $70 to $150 per night, which is pretty reasonable for what you get. As for food and activities, they come with extra costs, but nothing that’ll break the bank.
Final Thoughts
So, that’s my day at the Bay of Lights. If you’re looking for a relaxing but fun escape with beautiful views and plenty to do, this place won’t disappoint.
